Bedroom Circuit — Electrical Findings

Running the treadmill and a portable AC on the same bedroom circuit tripped its breaker — but the breaker handle never moved to the tripped position (looked ON), and power only returned after cycling it fully OFF then ON. Monitoring since found measurable added resistance inside this branch/breaker plus an arc-fault signature on the same leg. Panel is a Zinsco. A separate utility-side sag on the other leg is a PG&E matter — not this circuit.
1. The event
- Treadmill + portable AC, same circuit, together → breaker tripped (≈ 20–24 A on a 15/20 A circuit).
- Breaker did not indicate a trip (handle looked ON).
- Restored only by switching the breaker fully OFF, then ON.
2. The circuit
- Panel: Zinsco, bedroom branch circuit.
- Loads: computer/TV, 3D printer, a smart power strip (portable AC + fan + soundbar + subwoofer + air purifier), treadmill.
- Portable AC: 14,000 BTU (12,000 SACC), 115 V, 11.9 A rated.
3. Measured resistance in THIS circuit ← the issue
Plug-in energy monitors, ~1 reading/sec, cross-checked against a separate circuit on the same panel (Tesla Wall Connector).
- Under the AC (~11.8 A compressor draw), Leg B sags ≈ 5.7 V under load (worst 114.3 V, 2026-07-20 21:52:12).
- Cross-checked against the Tesla circuit (same panel, different breaker): ≈ 1.8 V of that sag is inside this branch + breaker — the rest (≈ 4.0 V) is shared/service.
- At the AC's draw that is ≈ 0.15 Ω inside this circuit/breaker (vs ≈ 0.34 Ω shared). A healthy branch adds a fraction of that.
- Captured across 14 heavy Leg-B load session(s), 0 readings below 114 V.
4. Arc-fault detection (independent sensor)
- A Ting (Whisker Labs) sensor on this leg reports electrical-fire-hazard status "ReviewedSuspicious" (level 30), first flagged 2026-07-19 11:51 PM and continuous since, while RMS voltage was normal.
- Ting detects arcing (independent of voltage sag) — intermittent arcing on this circuit. Active fire alarm: no.
5. What the data points to — for your assessment
One Zinsco circuit showing (1) a breaker that trips without indicating and needs a manual reset, (2) ~0.15 Ω of added resistance measured inside it under load, and (3) an arc-fault signature — matches the documented Zinsco failure mode (internal contact wear → high resistance + arcing, unreliable tripping). Deferring to your read, but the data keeps pointing at the breaker and its terminations on this circuit.
6. Suggested checks
- Thermal scan of the breaker + connections under load (deadfront off).
- Torque / condition check of the breaker, bus stab, and branch terminations.
- General assessment of the Zinsco panel.
7. Not this circuit
Separately, the other leg shows intermittent sags to ~104 V that trace to the utility service side (neighbor affected; moved when PG&E worked next door). That's a PG&E matter — not this breaker or panel.
